Cameras are easy to buy and easy to get wrong. A few decisions up front save a lot of frustration.
Wired or Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi cameras are quick to put up, but they depend on a strong Wi-Fi signal and either batteries or a nearby outlet. Wired cameras (often powered over the same network cable, called PoE) take more work to install but are the most reliable, especially outdoors and across larger buildings.
Where does the video go?
- In the cloud: easy to view anywhere, but usually a monthly subscription per camera, and it uses your internet upload
- On a recorder (NVR) on site: no monthly fee and footage stays with you, but the recorder needs a safe spot and a backup plan
Where to put them
- Doors and gates people actually use
- Where you take payments or keep valuable stock
- Parking and loading areas
- Point them at your own property, not into neighbours' windows
Rules about recording sound are stricter than for video in many places, so check before you turn on audio recording.
Keep the accounts in your name
Whoever installs them, the camera app and recorder accounts should be in your name, with you as the owner and two-step sign-in turned on.
