Your domain (yourbusiness.com) is your address online: your website and your e-mail both depend on it. Losing control of it is one of the most painful problems a small business can have.
The parts
- The registrar: the company you pay each year to keep the domain
- DNS: the settings that say where your website and e-mail live
- The website and e-mail themselves, which can be with other companies
Keep it yours
- Register it in the business's name, with an e-mail address the business controls
- Turn on auto-renew, and keep the payment card current
- Turn on two-step sign-in at the registrar
- Turn on the transfer lock, so it can't be moved away without you
- Make sure at least two trusted people can get into the account
Watch out for
- Letters or e-mails saying your domain is about to expire, from companies you've never used: these are often scams trying to make you transfer it
- A web designer who registered your domain in their own name: ask them to move it to you
We check where your domain is, put it in the business's name, and set the protections up properly.
