The files are the easy part. It's the things people don't think of that cause the "where did that go?" moments later.
What to move
- Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Music and Videos folders
- E-mail, if it isn't already stored online
- Browser bookmarks and saved passwords
- Files that live inside programs: accounting data, design projects, game saves
- Fonts, templates and e-mail signatures you rely on
Ways to do it
- Cloud sync: if your files are already in OneDrive, Google Drive or iCloud, signing in on the new computer brings them across
- An external drive: copy everything over, then copy it onto the new computer
- Apple's Migration Assistant, when moving from Mac to Mac
- Signing in to your browser and password manager on the new computer brings bookmarks and passwords along
What people forget
- Licences and product keys for paid software
- Programs that must be deactivated on the old computer before they'll activate on the new one
- Printer and scanner settings
- Files saved somewhere unusual, like straight onto the C: drive
Keep the old computer untouched until you've used the new one for a week or two. We move everything across for you and check nothing's missed.
