A point-of-sale system is only as reliable as the network and hardware around it. Set these up and test them before a busy day tests them for you.
Network first
- Wire the main checkout station to the router with a network cable where you can
- Card readers and the POS on the business network, never the guest Wi-Fi
- A plan for when the internet drops: check whether your system has an offline mode, and how it handles payments
Hardware
- Card readers paired, charged and updated
- Receipt printer and cash drawer connected and tested together
- Barcode scanner and label printer, if you use them
- A surge protector, and ideally a small battery backup for the checkout
Accounts and security
- Each staff member with their own login or PIN, not a shared one
- Only managers can give refunds or discounts
- Two-step sign-in on the owner's account
- Taxes, categories and tips set up correctly before the first sale
Before opening
- Run a test sale and a refund
- Print and e-mail a receipt
- Count the drawer and close the day once, so everyone knows how
We set up Square, Clover and other point-of-sale systems so the hardware, Wi-Fi and accounts all work together.
