A home office should be as dependable as the one at work, and just as safe for business information. Here's what to put in place.
Keep work and home separate
- Use a work computer for work, and don't let family members use it
- If you must share a computer, give each person their own sign-in
- Keep work files in the company's storage (OneDrive, Google Drive or a server), not just on the desktop
Secure the home network
- Change the router's admin password from the default
- Use WPA2 or WPA3 security with a strong Wi-Fi password
- Keep the router's software updated, or replace a router that no longer gets updates
- Put smart TVs, cameras and gadgets on a guest network if your router supports it
Protect the accounts
- Turn on two-step sign-in for work e-mail and anything else you can
- Use a password manager
- Lock the screen when you step away (Windows key + L on a PC)
Make video calls reliable
- Use a network cable for the work computer if you can
- Put the router somewhere central and open, not in a cupboard
- A headset makes you easier to hear and stops echo
- Face a window or a lamp, not away from it
Plan for the bad day
Know who to call if the computer fails, and check that your work files are backed up. A phone hotspot is a good backup if the internet drops.
We set up home offices for employees and owners: secure Wi-Fi, a reliable connection, and the work accounts done properly.
