If pages come out blank or faded, the printer is talking to the computer fine. The problem is getting ink or toner onto the page.
Inkjet printers
- Check ink levels, and that new cartridges had their protective tape removed
- Run the printer's own "clean print head" or "nozzle check" from its menu or app
- Printers that sit unused for weeks dry out: printing a page every week or two helps
Laser printers
- Check the toner, and gently rock the cartridge side to side to spread the toner
- Make sure the cartridge is seated properly and any shipping clips are removed
- Faded or streaky pages can mean a worn drum, which is replaced separately on many models
Settings to check
- Draft or toner-save mode turned on
- The wrong paper type selected
- Printing from one program only: try printing a test page from the printer itself
If cleaning doesn't help, a repair can cost more than a new printer. We'll tell you honestly which makes sense, and set up the replacement for everyone in the office.
