Windows updates matter for security, so it's worth getting a stuck one sorted rather than ignoring it.
Stuck on "Working on updates"
Big updates can take a long time, sometimes over an hour on older computers. If the disk light is still flickering, wait. Turning it off in the middle of an update is what usually causes real problems.
If it's truly stuck (no activity for a couple of hours)
- Hold the power button to turn it off, then turn it back on
- Let Windows try to undo the update if it offers to
- If it won't start, use the recovery options to uninstall the latest update or use System Restore
If an update fails again and again
- Make sure there's enough free disk space
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter (Settings, System, Troubleshoot)
- Restart properly (not sleep) and try again
- Unplug extra USB devices during the update
Repeated failures can also point to a failing drive or a damaged Windows install. We find the cause, fix it, and make sure your important files are backed up first.
