Internet down? How to tell if it's you or your provider

Falls Technology Services · Idaho Falls · October 25, 2026

When nothing can get online, the first question is whether the problem is inside your building or with your internet provider.

1. Is it every device, or just one?

If your phone works on Wi-Fi but the computer doesn't, the internet is fine and the problem is that one device. If nothing connects, keep going.

2. Look at the modem

The modem is the box your provider gave you (sometimes combined with the router). A light marked Internet, Online or WAN that is off, red or blinking for a long time usually means the provider's signal isn't reaching you.

3. Restart in the right order

  1. Unplug the modem and the router
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Plug in the modem first and wait until its lights settle (a few minutes)
  4. Then plug in the router

4. Check for an outage

Use your phone's mobile data to check your provider's outage page or app, or call them. If there's an outage in your area, there's nothing to fix at your end; it comes back when they repair it.

5. Check the cables

Make sure the cable from the wall (coax, fibre or phone line) is firmly connected to the modem, and the cable between the modem and the router too.

When to call us

If the provider says everything is fine on their side but you still can't get online, or it keeps dropping, the problem is usually the router, the cabling or the setup. We find it and fix it, and for a business that can't be offline we can set up a backup connection.
