Smart devices are only smart while they're connected. When they keep dropping off, it's almost always the network, not the device.
Common causes
- Many smart devices only work on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; a router that combines bands under one name can confuse them during setup
- Too far from the router, or behind walls, metal or appliances
- Too many devices for an older or provider-supplied router
- A new router or a changed Wi-Fi name or password: every device has to be set up again
- Devices that use their own radio (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread) and need a working hub or bridge
Try this first
- Restart the device, then the router
- Check the device's app for updates
- Move the router somewhere more central, or add a mesh point near the problem devices
- Check that the hub or bridge is powered and connected
Make it reliable
A solid home network, devices on the right Wi-Fi band, and a hub for Zigbee or Z-Wave devices make most problems go away. Keeping smart devices on their own guest or IoT network also keeps your computers and phones safer.
We set up smart homes so they stay working, and fix the ones that don't.
