Most of the time the camera and microphone work fine, and something is stopping the app from using them.
Check in this order
- A physical privacy shutter over the camera, or a camera or microphone key switched off (common on laptops)
- Inside the call app's settings, choose the right camera, microphone and speaker
- Permissions: Windows Settings, Privacy & security, Camera and Microphone, and allow the app; on a Mac, System Settings, Privacy & Security
- Close other apps that might be using the camera
- In a web browser, allow the camera and microphone for that site (the icon in the address bar)
Still nothing?
- Restart the computer and update the call app
- Try an external USB webcam or headset to see whether the built-in part has failed
- Update the camera driver from the computer maker's support page
We set up reliable video-call setups for home offices and meeting rooms, and fix the ones that won't cooperate.
