Many "virus" warnings are scam pop-ups, and many real infections show no warning at all. Here's how to tell, and what to do.
Signs of real malware
- Your browser's home page or search engine changed by itself
- Programs you didn't install, or new toolbars and extensions
- Friends receiving messages you didn't send
- Your antivirus has been turned off
- The computer suddenly much slower, with the fan running hard
Probably a scam, not a virus
A web page shouting that your computer is infected and telling you to call a number. Close the browser; see our page on that pop-up.
What to do first
- Disconnect from the internet if you suspect something is actively wrong
- Don't type passwords on that computer until it's clean
- From a different device, change your e-mail and banking passwords and turn on two-step sign-in
- Run a full scan with Windows Security (or your antivirus)
Cleaning up properly
Removing what the scan finds isn't always enough: some malware hides or comes back. We remove it, check browser settings, extensions and startup items, update everything, and make sure your accounts are secured. If a computer is badly infected, a clean reinstall with your files copied across can be the safer choice.
