Your plan's speed is what reaches your modem. What reaches your phone or laptop is often much less, and Wi-Fi is usually why.
Test it properly
- Run a speed test on a computer plugged straight into the router with a network cable
- Then run one over Wi-Fi, close to the router
- Then one where you usually work
- Do it at a couple of different times of day
What the results mean
- Slow even with a cable: the problem is the connection or the modem; call your provider with your test results
- Fast with a cable, slow over Wi-Fi: the router or the Wi-Fi setup is the bottleneck
- Fast near the router, slow far away: you need better coverage (better placement, mesh or access points)
- Slow only in the evening: congestion on the provider's network, or many devices in use at home
Common fixes
- Restart the modem and router
- Move the router somewhere central and open
- Replace an old router that can't handle your plan's speed
- Use a cable for the computers and TVs that matter most
We measure where the speed is lost and fix the right part, so you get what you pay for.
