Keyboard and touchpad problems are often a setting or a driver, not broken hardware. Try these first.
Quick fixes
- Restart the laptop
- Touchpad: check it isn't turned off: many laptops have a key (often a function key with a touchpad picture) that switches it off
- Plug in a USB keyboard or mouse: if they work, the computer is fine and the problem is the built-in part
- Wrong characters (@ and " swapped): check the keyboard language and layout settings
- Some keys dead after a spill: turn it off and see our spilled-drink page
Software causes
- Install updates, including drivers from the laptop maker's support page
- On Windows, look for the keyboard or touchpad in Device Manager and update or reinstall the driver
- Check Windows accessibility settings: Filter Keys or Sticky Keys can make typing behave strangely
When it's hardware
Keys that stopped after a spill or a knock, keys physically stuck or missing, or a touchpad that's raised or uneven (which can mean a swelling battery underneath: stop using it and call us). Laptop keyboards and touchpads can usually be replaced.
