A computer that freezes now and then is annoying; one that freezes often is warning you about something. Narrow it down like this.
Does it freeze at a particular time?
- Only in one program: update or reinstall that program
- Soon after starting up: too many programs starting at once, or a failing drive
- After running a while, especially if it's hot: dust and heat
- Since a recent update or new device: undo that change
The usual causes
- Almost no free disk space
- Not enough memory for how you use it
- A failing drive: freezes, clicking sounds, or very slow file opening
- Overheating
- Old drivers, especially graphics
- Malware or junk software
Clues Windows keeps for you
Search the Start menu for "Reliability Monitor": it lists crashes and problems by date, which often points straight at the cause.
Back up first
If it's getting worse, copy your important files somewhere safe now, in case it's the drive.
We test the drive, memory and temperatures to find the real cause, and fix it, or tell you honestly if replacing the computer makes more sense.
