How you get back in depends on what kind of account the computer uses. These are the official ways; they only work for the computer's real owner.
If you sign in with a Microsoft account (an e-mail address)
Reset the password online from another device at Microsoft's account recovery page, then sign in to the computer with the new password (the computer needs to be online). If you normally use a PIN, choose "I forgot my PIN" on the sign-in screen.
If it's a local account (just a name)
- Answer the security questions shown after a wrong password, if you set them up
- Use a password reset disk, if you made one
- Ask someone with another administrator account on the computer to reset it
If none of that works
The computer can be reset to factory settings, but that erases it. Before that, your files can usually be copied off safely, unless the drive was encrypted (BitLocker) and the recovery key can't be found. The key is often saved in the Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com.
We help owners get back into their own computers and save their files. We need to see that the computer is yours.
