A second screen is one of the cheapest ways to work faster. When it won't show anything, work through these.
Check the simple things
- Make sure the monitor is on and set to the right input (HDMI 1, DisplayPort and so on) using its own buttons
- Re-seat both ends of the cable, or try another cable
- Restart the computer with the monitor connected
Tell the computer it's there
- Windows: press the Windows key + P and choose "Extend", then Settings, System, Display, "Detect"
- Mac: System Settings, Displays; use "Arrange" to place the screens the way they sit on your desk
Adapters and docks
Many laptops need an adapter or dock. Not every USB-C port can send video, and cheap adapters often don't. Check the laptop's ports: a small display or Thunderbolt symbol next to the port usually means it can. Some laptops and docks also need a driver from the maker's support page.
We set up desks with one or more extra screens, the right dock and tidy cables, so it all works when you sit down.
