An iPhone that won't turn on is usually one of three things: a completely flat battery, a frozen system, or a hardware fault. Try these in order.
1. Charge it properly
Plug it in with a cable and charger you know work, and leave it for 30 to 60 minutes. A completely flat battery can take a while to show anything.
2. Force restart
On iPhone 8 and later: press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. This doesn't erase anything.
3. Stuck on the Apple logo?
Connect it to a computer and use recovery mode to update the iPhone (Apple's support site shows the steps). Choose "Update", not "Restore": Update keeps your data, Restore erases it.
When it's hardware
- It got wet, or was dropped just before it stopped
- The screen lights up faintly or you hear sounds, but see nothing (often the screen)
- It gets hot while charging but never turns on
- It only works while plugged in (often the battery)
We repair screens, batteries and charging ports, and can often get photos off a phone that won't start. Check whether your photos were backed up to iCloud before deciding what to do.
