A password prompt that won't go away usually means Outlook is holding an old or outdated way of signing in.
Common causes
- Your password changed, but Outlook still has the old one saved
- Two-step sign-in was turned on and Outlook needs to sign in again
- An old version of Outlook, or an account set up with an older sign-in method that the provider no longer allows
- A problem with the account itself (locked, or the subscription lapsed)
Try these
- Sign in to your e-mail in a web browser to confirm the password works
- Update Outlook, and restart the computer
- On Windows, remove the old saved Outlook and Office passwords in Credential Manager, then open Outlook and sign in again
- If it still asks, remove the account from Outlook and add it again (your mail is on the server, so nothing is lost on Microsoft 365 or Google)
For a business
If several people are affected at once, the cause is usually a change on the account or domain side. We sort out sign-in problems across the whole team and make sure everyone's phones and computers reconnect.
