A full phone slows down, can't update, and stops taking photos. Here's how to clear space without deleting anything you'll miss.
See what's using it
- iPhone: Settings, General, iPhone Storage
- Android: Settings, Storage (names vary a little by phone maker)
The safe order
- Back up photos and videos first (iCloud Photos or Google Photos), and check the backup finished
- Then let the phone keep smaller copies: "Optimize iPhone Storage" on iPhone, or "Free up space" in Google Photos
- Delete apps you don't use, or offload them (iPhone keeps their data)
- Clear big message attachments and old video downloads
- Empty the "Recently Deleted" album: deleted photos still use space for about 30 days
Don't
- Delete photos before you've checked they're backed up
- Install "cleaner" apps: they rarely help and some are scams
If your cloud storage is full too, it's worth sorting out properly. We help families set up backups and storage so phones stop filling up.
